Portable digital tester, to measure TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and water temperature.
The amount of fixed water residue is expressed in PPM (1 ppm ≅ 1 mg/L).
It allows easy checking of the health status of all reverse osmosis systems. It is often used to control the water inside aquariums.
The TDS is the total amount of all minerals, salts, metals, anions or cations dissolved in a given volume of water, including anything present in the water, except for molecules, solids and particles that are not dissolved but remain in Suspension. It is expressed in mg / L or in parts per million “ppm”. So PPMs indicate how many milligrams of dissolved solids are contained in one liter of water.
The total concentration of dissolved solids is given by the sum of the ions present in the water of: sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chlorides, sulphates, bicarbonates and others.
A TDS meter is based on the electrical conductivity of water (EC), measured in microsiemens (μS). Since there is an increase in electrical conductivity in proportion to the quantity of dissolved substances, this is a useful parameter to obtain an (approximate) measure of the content of dissolved salts in mineral water (fixed residue). Very "pure" water (distilled, deionized, etc.) has a very low electrical conductivity (about 1 microsiemens per cm - µS / cm). Conductivity also depends on the water temperature, and therefore it is necessary to bring the measured values back to the theoretical ones that would occur at a reference temperature of 25 ° C (or 18 ° C or 20 ° C). Most of the commercialized mineral waters have electrical conductivity between 100 and 700 µS / cm.
Warning: TDS and electrical conductivity are not the same.
